She savored the moment her solitude began, when he packed his suitcase and set sail toward his new life. On his way, he left behind a forgotten sweater—the one she had knitted for him. That sweater represented all the good she could have wished for him; it was the attention of countless hours and the balance of the threshold of perfection she had dedicated to him. He took more pleasure in forgetting that hideous sweater than she did in being left alone with those sad skeins of yarn.
