She knew anguish long before he left, and she came to love it. She loved it more than she loved him. Anguish tormented her, it exhausted her. She was an anguished and exhausted woman who did not love her husband; she could not do it. He strove to love her as she deserved, but she, in reality, deserved nothing at all.
