Her body twisted with anguish when the news reached her. She turned into crumpled, transparent cellophane—so much so that you could see her arteries, tense and exhausted from pumping blood at such high speed.

That very afternoon, she no longer wanted to speak; her lips would not part, remaining sealed until the end. Absence shut down all possible communication, all possibility of rest, any reason to find answers to what he had left inside her womb—something he would never get to know. The emptiness of absence was worse than the absence itself.
